Nicole Ari Parker is an American film TV and stage actor known for her performance as the spirited attorney Teri Joseph on the Showtime series Soul Food. After her marriage she became Nikki Kodjoe. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland she showed an aptitude for acting in her when she was a child and won an award for the best Actress prize at the Maryland high-school competition. In the years following her work in theater, as well as 'The Washington Ballet Company' she earned a certificate in acting from New York University. The family was born to Mumbai, India and raised in Nigeria until the age of seven, Contractor was a seasoned traveler who enjoyed the world and an array of different cultures from a young age. She attended boarding schools from the age of 7 until 9 in London. After that, she and her family returned home to Toronto (Canada) where they spent her entire childhood. Contractor had a great academic career in Toronto in addition to her training as a ballerina. She went to the Etobicoke School of the Arts. It's a high school that teaches arts where she did not only learn about theater, but also dance as well. At the age of 16 and after more than 10 years of dancing, Contractor realized she wanted to study acting professionally. As she finished high school with an all-inclusive tuition grant to the University of Toronto where she studied theatre with a double degrees in Sociology and Psychology. Contractor, who had completed her university degree, went on to audition at an open call for Pericles which was held at the highly acclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival, [Ontario Canadain Canada] and was selected for the role. After 92 performances, she received praise from the audience. The production was recognized as one of the most successful productions by Canadian critics. The actress accepted an invitation to join Stratford's conservatory, a program where only four men and eight females can attend an intensive 20-week program in classical theatre. Contractor was offered a place for the next season, and was offered the role as Hermia.
